I’m one of those people who can spend hours looking at data in Google Trends. I could tell you something interesting every day based on the information I find there. To my mind Google Trends is on par with Google Keyword Planner and Opensiteexplorer – all of them very powerful online tools and totally essential in my line of work.
Why is all this so interesting? Well, from my perspective it confirms that the general interest in SEO shows no sign of weakening. Also there is a tickle of interest in social media marketing – which I suspect will gain steady ground over the coming years. For that reason I will be focussing my business efforts in meeting client demands in those areas.
PPC advertising saw a pretty nasty decline after the financial crisis hit and I am not surprised. People were tightening their belts and looking for cheaper alternatives to traffic through SEO. I’m glad about this in a way – because a lower general interest in PPC advertising makes campaigns more cost effective – you get more bang for your buck. If it trends up to where it was pre-crisis then it’s going to get expensive!
What I was surprised by was the decline in interest in web design. It looks like the stock price of a British bank. The more I do though, the more my skills seem to be in demand. I cannot see an end to the amount of web design work available.
It will be interesting to look again in five, ten, twenty years to see how things pan out. Nobody can predict the future but my money is on SEO staying strong with PPC advertising gaining interest. Paid ads are dominating the search more and more and intelligent businesses are not ignoring the power of PPC advertising and remarketing. Social media marketing will grow big time. All I can say is that I’m glad to be working in a sector with a bright future…
