2023 Shopify pricing plan update & our calculator
The calculator & related content has been updated to reflect the 2023 Shopify plan changes which affect new plans and will be phased in for those on existing plans. Basically the old prices are fixed when choosing an annual Shopify plan and the monthly plans have gone up. We have assumed that most people will choose one of the annual plans and so the calculator stays as it is above. If using a monthly plan the costs will be different.
How Our Shopify Pricing Calculator Works
Our Shopify Pricing Calculator works by adding:
- The selected Shopify plan fee
- transaction fees for the plan (based on % of sales)
- Payment gateway fees estimate
As you can see by selecting the different packages above and entering estimated sales and gateway options – different monthly fees and transaction fees apply. Some businesses spend very little on their Shopify plan and others spend thousands of dollars every month. You should spend some time calculating which is best Shopify plan for your business based on the functionality you require and your monthly estimated sales. Like with all things in live it’s not just a case of cheapest is best!
Calculating Shopify monthly costs has never been easier! Use the Shopify plans comparison table above and enter your estimated sales and gateway choice to find the best price point for your store.
Remember that if you’re using an external payment gateway (such as Paypal or Worldpay) then you’ll need to pay transaction fees for using those gateways in addition to the Shopify transaction fees. Our Shopify fee calculator doesn’t include these external payment gateway fees as they all depend on your location and sales volume/trading history. Rates typically range from 1-4% for external gateways and you can find a list of supported payment gateways by country on Shopify.
Why do Shopify charge transaction fees?
People new to the eCommerce ecosystem often get confused by Shopify’s pricing model – especially when it comes to their transaction fees. But it really makes sense when you think about it and spend time using the platform.
There is a very strong correlation between store sales and platform usage. The more transactions there are on a store, the more the store will be using the hosting service and support service provided by Shopify. It’s not 100% accurate in determining usage but it’s pretty close and on average correlates. So Shopify’s transaction fees are a charge for platform usage. The more you use the platform, the more you pay.
Some Shopify merchants think this is unfair but it isn’t really. Shopify pricing is pretty fair and they are a business – not a charity. The fixed monthly fee is there to cover the software costs which Shopify do a very good job of maintaining. The transaction fees cover the hosting/server costs incurred by Shopify. So when you think about it this way – the pricing model makes perfect sense. Some plans you pay more upfront and thus save on transaction costs.
As our Shopify Pricing Calculator shows, you can pay 0% Shopify transaction fees for your store if you use Shopify Payments. This means that if you accept debit and credit cards using Shopify payments you can save between 0.25% and 2% – depending on your Shopify plan.
If you need to use an external gateway (e.g. to use 3d secure via a gateway like Sagepay) then it may make sense to opt for one of the higher Shopify plans like Shopify Advanced or Shopify Plus to keep your transaction fees to a minimum.
However if you’re just starting out those higher plans can seem expensive. In this can we suggest you opt for one of the lower plans and use Shopify payments in order to avoid the transaction fees from Shopify.
Why we built the best online Shopify fee Calculator?
We build this awesome online tool to help calculate Shopify fees for our clients. Nobody else had done it and it was desperately needed! Shopify pricing isn’t so easy and clear and we wanted to take the guesswork out of the equation for our clients. So we spent a rainy day coding this calculator and then spent another day ensuring you could find it in Google.
Nobody likes surprises when it comes to costs and anyone with half a business brain wants to know exactly what they’ll pay for a service. We found that many of our Shopify clients or potential Shopify clients were confused by the pricing model offered by Shopify – there were too many costs and fees. They also couldn’t find all the features of all the different Shopify Plans in one place – especially for the higher plan Shopify Plus. So we created a simple tool to calculate all the potential costs of using Shopify whilst comparing the features.
I’ve got a suggestion for how to improve this Shopify fee calculator
We’d love to hear how we can improve this Shopify fee calculator. Just drop us a line in the contact form below and we’ll discuss it at the next review with our Shopify Developers. our aim is to make this tool better and better every time!
How much does Shopify Cost?
Shopify has a number of different plans – all with a different monthly fee. The different plans have different features as shown in the table above and also different fees for transactions.
Before choosing a Shopify plan you should estimate your total monthly sales and use the above Shopify fee & cost calculator to ensure you’re aware of all the fees you’ll need to pay for your online store with Shopify. Remember – that for many merchants using Shopify Payments for accepting credit and debit cards is the most cost effective way of running your store and you should always assume that your sales will grow in the mid term.
Is Shopify Worth the Costs/Fees?
We’re a leading Shopify design agency with an international client base. In our opinion Shopify is the best ecommerce platform for 2018 and beyond and well worth the monthly fees. We only consider other options at the enterprise level where there are cases in which Magento is more suitable. For 98% of online stores Shopify is the most cost effective choice.
The Shopify software (CMS) is a first-rate, dedicated ecommerce CMS. And the hosting is blazing fast via the Fastly CDN. Some people think that self-hosting a WordPress or Magento site is cheaper but this is always a false economy. Remember – you may pay less for (low quality hosting) but you’ll spend more on maintenance and your website will be slow for international customers. Maintaining security on a self hosted ecommerce site will burn your profits quicker than anything.
Shopify is absolutely, 100% the leading eCommerce platform of our time. It’s fast, reliable, is packed full of all the features you could ever need and it’s growing faster than any other CMS in the world. Large clients like Tesla, Lady Gaga, Budweiser, Wateraid, The Economist and many, many more….
Why do Shopify charge a monthly fee and a transaction fee?
Shopify charge both a monthly fee for the plan and a transaction fee. This transaction fee is waived if you’re using Shopify payments as the Payment gateway. This fee ranges from 0% (Shopify Plus) to 2% on the Basic Shopify Plan. See features in the table above.
This pricing structure is based on the idea that the more sales you make – the more you use the platform which makes sense if you think about it. More sales very often means more server and file usage as well as more support from Shopify.
You can avoid or reduce these Shopify transaction fees by selecting a higher plan or using Shopify payments.
Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of when using Shopify?
Shopify uses a slightly complex pricing model based on usage – but we wouldn’t say that those prices are hidden.
Shopify stores typically incur the following fees/costs:
- Shopify Plan fees – which start from $5/month
- Shopify transaction fees – which range from 0-2% depending on your plan and gateway.
- Payment Gateway Fees – which usually range from 1-4%. With a typical rate being 2.6% + 30c per transaction. Remember – even Shopify payments has gateway fees as detailed in the table above. Even if your Shopify transaction fees are 0% (only possible when using Shopify Payments) – you must also then pay transaction fees for Shopify payments (which will depend on your plan.)
- App fees – many stores use apps to extend the core functionality. These apps often have charges to pay for continued support and development. Some are free but most are paid. Most apps are developed by third parties and these fees are paid to them through Shopify. Not all stores need apps but many merchants chose to use them as they can make life easier and can be used to save time or make more sales. We can’t give a price here because it will all depend on your business needs. Some stores pay $0 for apps and others spend hundreds of dollars.
Aside from the above then you shouldn’t incur any other costs. Shopify support is free. If you need to hire a Shopify designer or developer you will need to pay for their services though.
We offer setup, support, design, development, marketing and maintenance for Shopify stores. And you can find our current price for Shopify development on our pricing page.
Who built this Shopify cost/fee calculator?
This Shopify fee calculator was built by Shopify Plus developers and Shopify designers at Liquify Web Design. We are official Shopify experts and build custom Shopify stores for clients all around the world – all day, every day of the week.
When was this Shopify fee calculator last updated? Are prices up to date with the most recent price changes?
This calculator for Shopify fees and costs was last updated in Feb 2023. If there are any pricing changes with regards to Shopify we will aim to update the code/content as soon as possible. We provide no guarantee of the accuracy but will do our best to keep the calculator up-to-date since we also need it from time to time.
Are Shopify likely to increase pricing soon?
Note: shopify last updated prices in Jan 2023 and will come into force over q1 2023 for existing merchants. Basically the price is the same if using an annual plan but the price for monthly plans has gone up.
Nobody can know if Shopify pricing will change. We’ve been expecting a price raise on the following plans for some time: Shopify Basic and Shopify. We suspect we will not see another price update now to Shopify plans until 2027.
We do not expect price changes for Shopify Lite for quite a long time as this plan is very new and it would be hard to see where the price could go to justify the features (it really is lite). We also do not expect Shopify Plus prices to change as they have changed already in 2017 and we’ve documented this in a separate article: How Much Does Shopify Plus Cost?.
Are Shopify Plan Prices Negotiable?
Excellent question. The short answer is that yes, they are. Usually however they are only negotiable when you’ve got multiple stores. If you’re thinking about opening new stores (for multiple currencies) then contact us and we’ll try to negotiate the best rate for you with Shopify.
Are Shopify Plan Prices the same around the world?
Shopify pricing is the same in all countries including the US (United States), Australia, UK, Iceland, Ireland, Denmark, Singapore, Norway, Qatar, Switzerland, Luxembourg, hong Kong and more. Prices are all charged in USD.

Shopify Pricing – The Ultimate Guide to Shopify Pricing Plans 2023/2024
Sometimes, as much as we hate to admit it, it all comes down to crunching the numbers and finding the best solution for you. Let’s look at the 2023/2024 Shopify pricing plans so that you can make the best decision for your business!
An Overview of Shopify Pricing
When looking for the best option for your new Shopify store, there are five different Shopify pricing plans to choose from.
- First, you have the Shopify Starter Plan that costs as little as $5 per month and is best suited for those who wish to sell on Facebook, on WordPress Blogs, or in person ($1 dollar seals are available in some countries).
- Then, you have the Basic plan, which is $29 per month when paying annually and $39/mon and is best for those who are just opening their first store.
- If you already have a business and it’s growing steadily, the Shopify Plan is the best option for you, and it’s readily available for $79 per month when paying annually or $105 when paying monthly.
- Those who experience constant growth and are investing into becoming key players will be happy with everything the Shopify Advanced Plan has to offer, especially when considering all these features will cost only about $399 per month monthly ($299/month when paying annually).
- There’s even a plan for the biggest enterprise players, called the Shopify Plus Plan, (costs depend on usage) and offers a complete package for both rocket start-ups and big brands and starts from $2000 per month.
Shopify pricing and plans are not just about the monthly fees though; there are also transaction fees that have to be taken into account when deciding which plan would best suit your budget. Each of the five plans Shopify offers have different transaction fees. As a merchant, you can save a lot by just switching to a plan with lower transaction fees, even if your base monthly fee might be higher, because the fees depend heavily on your sales volume (it works out cheaper in the end!)
The payment gateway transaction fees differ depending on the payment method. For instance, one way to reduce fees is to make sure you are eligible for Shopify Payments, as the vast majority of merchants who are eligible can reduce the transaction fees to 0%.
Shopify Pricing for the Shopify Starter Plan
The Starter plan is best suited for those who are aiming to sell through their Facebook or WordPress blog page. This is because with this plan, some features are not available, for example you can sell on Amazon or Messenger, for instance, but not on Pinterest or Wish. The Shopify price for the Shopify Basic plan is $5 per month but you may get deals for $1 per month in some countries (time limited).
With this plan, you will have 0% transaction fees when using Shopify Payments, and the fees will be 2% when using external payment gateways, like PayPal and others.
What’s most important to know here is that the price of the plan is so low because you do not have your own store. You can only sell via channels like Amazon and Facebook.
Shopify Pricing for the Shopify Basic Plan
The Shopify price for the Shopify Basic plan is $29 per month when paying annually or $39 per month, which is also something that is easily affordable to most merchants. This plan is well-suited to anyone who is just starting their eCommerce endeavours, and the plan comes with your own online store, where you can sell unlimited products on a custom domain. Another feature that’s included is that your store will be SEO-friendly, so it automatically increases your chances of being found by your targeted customers via Google or other search engines. You will also gain access to your very own blog, which can further work for your strategy to boost your store.
With this plan, you will have 0% transaction fees when using Shopify Payments. If you use external payment gateways, you will pay 2% transaction fees per transactions in your shop.
Shopify Pricing for the Shopify Plan
The Shopify Plan is the midsize solution, that you will pay around $79 per month for when paying annually ($105 monthly). It is best suited for those who continue to grow their business, as it includes all the options from the lite and basic plans, and adds another layer of usability for things like staff accounts, fraud analysis, app integration and more.
With this option, your transaction fees for the Shopify Payments are 0%, while external payment gateways are 1%
Shopify Pricing for the Shopify Advanced Plan
The Advanced plan is brimming with features and is best for businesses that plan to take their Shopify store to the next level. The Shopify pricing has it available for $299 per month (when paying annually – $399 when paying monthly) and with this plan, you’ll pay 0% transaction fees for Shopify Payments, and only 0.5% when using external payment gateways.
Shopify Pricing for the Shopify Plus Plan
For enterprises, Shopify offers a fully customised solution that will cover all their needs, which is expected from the Shopify price (depends on usage) per month for this plan. With it, however, you get 0% transaction fees when using Shopify Payments, and external payment gateways will also be 0%.
Shopify Pricing Tips – 3 Tips to Save Money in Choosing the Right Shopify Pricing Plan
Shopify Pricing Tip 1 – In order to reduce your Shopify transaction fees, use Shopify Payments where possible as you could reduce the fees as low as 0%. Shopify payments are available to stores in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore. However, they are not available to U.S. territories except Puerto Rico.
Shopify Pricing Tip 2 – Your monthly sales play a big role in choosing your Shopify pricing plan, so it’s best to estimate your monthly sales for the whole year and then use the calculator above to find the Shopify pricing plan that will suit you best. Make sure to follow all the changes with the pricing plans and make sure to remember that you can upgrade and downgrade at any time. So if you’re experiencing much higher seasonal traffic (e.g. at Christmas), you could be sneaky and upgrade for this period and then downgrade when it’s over. You can do this with all the plans except Shopify Plus because this plan comes with a contract so it’s not as easy to switch.
Shopify Pricing Tip 3 – If you have more than one Shopify store, you can request discounts for the Shopify pricing plans for every other store. This could save hundreds of dollars on a monthly basis, so negotiate your custom pricing package with Shopify as soon as you can.
Conclusion on Shopify Pricing
Shopify pricing is flexible and adaptable to your store and needs, because there is a plan for everyone (even if you are upscaling.) Not only are their various plans chock full of features, they are also priced very reasonably, and the transaction fees are minimal, particularly when you know how to calculate it all. This makes Shopify pricing plans one of the best options when it comes to eCommerce.
